Without sin

Synopsis

In this case the screenplay narrates a confession from a woman who speaks of her relationship with another cryptic character: Mary. They become entangled in a lesbian romance, which is questioned by the narrator reflecting on the nature of desire and devotion. Mary is suicidal. In this bizarre dimension the Virgin Mary is a timeless intricate figure who doesn’t age. The narrator ends up agreeing to murder her to release her from immortality.

Again a reflection in depth of the christian myth regarding the correlation between death and the original sin, making Mary immortal for her immaculate condition; as well as another romantic interpretation of expiration signifying transcendence, release and sexual catharsis. The loss of the classic understanding of virtue, closely bound with the rupture of the intact hymen in the female anatomy, symbolises in this film the liberation from biological slavery experienced by the Virgin Mary, a bizarre form of emancipation fruit of her amorous encounter with the narrator. The relationship between the two protagonists also portrays the ambiguity of friendship and romantic involvement in victorian culture and its translation into contemporariness. The sadomasochist undertone of the sexual awakening of Mary and her tragic outcome, question the binary of traditional love and its violent counterpart, uniting in this case to create a complete coin involving both sides at the nucleus of the romance.
